Project Mockingbird was a hidden operation started by the Agency in the early 1950s. Its goal was to control the press and shape public views.The Agency recruited media personnel and penetrated major news organizations to circulate information that supported their goals. This operation comprised placing fake stories and silencing opposing opinions.
